La Palmyre Zoo is a private family-run zoo in Les Mathes, France. It was opened in 1966 in the forest of the Les Mathes by Claude Caille. Over 18 hectares (44 acres), including 14 of landscape garden, it offers the visitor the opportunity of observing more than 1700 animals of all kinds, divided into 170 species, over a distance of more than 4km (2.5 miles).


Approximately in a year, the animals eat away 250 tons of fodder, 50 tons of meat, 20 tons of fish and 180 tons of fresh fruit and vegetables according to the records. Two full time veterinarians are in charge of the health and well-being of the animals. The Palmyre Zoo participates in 40 European breeding programmes and provides funding for the conservation of endangered species.
