Countries with Largest Road Networks in the World

Most of the countries across the globe are connected by asphalt. These routes, traveling over vast distances, stitch everything together. They pull remote villages toward busy capitals, fuel trade that spans continents, and carry travelers chasing adventure.

But while there are an estimated 64.7 million km of roadway around the world, there are some countries whose networks occupy a massive chunk of this total. Whether they carve through rainforests or across red deserts, find below in details.

1. United States
Leading the fray with the biggest road network in the world is the US, which features an astonishing 6.8–7.0 million km of roads. Interstates have been known to cross a myriad of landscapes, and classic American road trips are certainly the epitome of freedom.

2. India
India has approximately 6.7 million km of roads. Traffic feels alive, with buses, bikes, and market stalls spilling into lanes across the nation. But these routes connect millions of lives with relentless energy.

3. China
China’s road network is more than three times the size of Russia, sitting at roughly 5.4–5.5 million km. New expressways and massive bridges knit together megacities, rural farmland, mountain regions, and remote plateaus.

4. Russia
Russia, the biggest country on Earth, has a road network that reaches about 981,718 miles (1.58 million km). Immense distances and harsh seasons mean travel can be demanding, but the routes cut through sweeping forests and beautifully remote towns.

5. Brazil
Arriving in fifth place is Brazil, which has around 971,600 miles (1.56 million km) of roads. Highways connect travelers to the Amazon rainforest, and also to cattle ranches and megacities. Some surfaces are rough, but the roads mirror Brazil’s scale and wild diversity.

6. Australia
Australia’s roads stretch roughly 821,600 miles (1.32 million km). Highways either hug the endless coasts or cross the red emptiness of the Outback. Long stretches between towns encourage careful planning for travelers, but they certainly reward drivers with dramatic open horizons.

7. Japan
Japan maintains about 765,000 miles (1.23 million km) of roads. Tight city grids contrast vividly with mountain expressways and coastal routes, all of which are unified by remarkable Japanese efficiency and technological innovation.

8. France
France’s network totals around 695,100 miles (1.12 million km). Toll motorways are fast, but country roads are known to wind past vineyards, castles, and lavender fields. Every region feels like a different storybook setting.

9. Canada
Canada has roughly 647,900 miles (1.04 million km) of roads. Since Canada is the second-largest nation on the planet, distances can be enormous. Driving sometimes feels like traversing entire ecosystems—forests, lakes, mountains—within one road trip.

10. Germany
Germany maintains about 515,400 miles (829,500 km) of roads. The Autobahn’s sections without speed limits draw drivers worldwide, and efficient engineering of the roads in Germany certainly supports industry and tourism.
