Sri Lankan spin bowler Sachitra Senanayake has been banned from
bowling in international cricket following a declaration made in the
International Cricket Council’s Bowling Action Legality Assessment Report
submitted to Sri Lanka Cricket.
Senanayake was booked for a suspect bowling action during Sri
Lanka’s tour of England last month after which a test was done on the spin
bowler at the Cardiff Metropolitan University - Cardiff School of Sport in
England.
It was found that Senanayake exceeded the 15-degree elbow
extension allowed for spinners in four deliveries during the fourth ODI against
England at Lord’s last month.
A product of Ananda College, Senanayake represented Sri Lanka in
37 ODIs taking 40 wickets while also playing in 17 T20s and claiming 18 scalps.
He conceded 66 runs in his 10 overs for a solitary wicket at yesterday’s third
ODI against South Africa in Hambantota which Sri Lanka lost. Sri Lanka Cricket
said in a statement yesterday that Senanayake’s ban will now be presented to
its Cricket Committee for recommendation.
