Shubman Gill named India’s new ODI captain

The 25-year-old, Test captain Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday dated 04/10/2025.

The new skipper will begin his stint with the three-match series against Australia, starting on October 19.

Despite the change in leadership, senior batters Rohit Sharma, 38, and Virat Kohli, 36, have both been included in the squad for the tour.

The change marks a major step for Gill, who took over as Test captain earlier this year and now assumes charge of the ODI side while also serving as T20I vice-captain.

His elevation comes shortly after he guided India to a resounding win over West Indies in his first Test as captain on home soil. Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been named ODI vice-captain.
