Norway is embarking on an ambitious engineering feat with the construction of the Rogfast tunnel, a $2 billion project poised to become the world's longest and deepest subsea road tunnel. Spanning approximately 27km (17 miles) and reaching an astounding depth of 392m (1,286 feet) below sea level, this colossal undertaking is a key component of Norway's national initiative to create a ferry-free E39 highway along its west coast.
The primary purpose of the Rogfast tunnel is to significantly reduce travel times and improve connectivity between major cities like Stavanger and Bergen. Currently, the E39 route is heavily reliant on multiple ferry crossings across deep fjords, making journeys lengthy and subject to delays due to weather.
Once completed, the Rogfast tunnel will eliminate these ferry segments, drastically cutting an approximately 21 hours drive by nearly half and providing a more efficient and reliable transportation link for both residents and industries. This pioneering project, slated for completion around 2033, underscores Norway's commitment to pushing the boundaries of infrastructure development and enhancing its coastal transportation network.
